Chinese Government: “No, We Are Not Feeding Africa Human Meat”

Chinese Government: “No, We Are Not Feeding Africa Human Meat”

Kachepa, a local gossip tabloid from Zambia, recently printed a headline that read “China Feeding Africa With Human Meat.” The article claimed that Chinese businesses sell marinated dead bodies as canned corned beef to Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, and other African countries.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei expressed dissatisfaction with the irresponsible report at a routine press conference yesterday. Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming issued a statement calling the article “baseless malicious slander.” Ambassador Yang has vowed to work with Zambian authorities to investigate the newspapers and its sources in order to eliminate the negative impact brought on by the news story.

The article quoted an unnamed Zambian woman living and worked in China. She claimed that she had been invited to tour a Chinese beef processing company, and found that the company had processed dead bodies into meat to ship to southern Africa. The woman released “real photos” on Facebook and called on Africans not to buy Chinese food products. “I do not know why they treat the people of African like this. Maybe because they are so many Chinese people they do not have enough burial places left. It also may simply be because of their greed!”

The article aroused widespread local concern in Zambia. Zambia’s Kitwe Times reprinted the article and it got thousands of views and shares online.

Snopes called the rumor false and said that at least one of the pictures posted in the story was a screenshot from a Resident Evil 6 marketing stunt in which a fake butcher shop selling “human meat” was set up in London.
