The leader of one of Tanzania’s departments for natural resources and tourism has called on China to halt its ivory demand, likening elephant hunting in that country to a national disaster.
A statistical report has shown that in 2014 Tanzania’s elephant numbers became reduced to 43 thousand, a number which is 60% less than what it was in 2009. Environmental groups have pinned blame on large scale elephant hunting activities which are aimed at satisfying demand for ivory in Asia.
Reports say that China, Vietnam, and other fast developing Asian countries’ demand for ivory have caused elephant hunting activities to increase. China is the world’s largest consumer of ivory.
In February, China announced implementation of a 1-year import ban on African ivory and ivory products, but the Tanzanian government says that ongoing corruption is still causing elephant hunting activities to persist.

I love how China, being a developing country, tries to distance itself from other developing countries but has more open and systemic corruption than most mid 90's tin pot dictatorships. I don't remember anyone in Mabuto Seseseko's Zaire selling melamine as baby food.
