Director Diao Yinan’s film noir thriller, Black Coal, Thin Ice, was awarded the Golden Bear for Best film at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival on Sunday. The film tells the story of a washed up police detective trying solve a string of murders in North China. This is the fourth time a Chinese film has won the top award, the other are: Xie Fei's Women from the Lake of Scented Souls in 1993, Zhang Yimou's Red Sorghum in 1988, and Wang Quan'an's Tuya's Marriage in 2007.
The film’s lead actor, Liao Fan, also came away with the Silver Bear for Best Actor, the first Chinese actor to win the award.
Two other Chinese films were competing for the Golden Bear on Sunday, ‘No Man’s Land’ and ‘Blind Massage’. The cinematographer for ‘Blind Massage’, Zeng Jian, won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution, capping off a successful campaign for Chinese cinematography.
