China’s “Leftover Men” Pay Agencies 60K to Marry Young Laotian Women

Single Chinese men are purchasing wives—mainly from foreign countries—online. There are currently more than 30 million more men than woman in China, and a large number of bachelors see themselves as “leftover men.” These men are turning to online matchmaking services to set them up with foreign brides. Recently a large number of men have paid to be matched with Laotian women.

Online international marriage brokers claim to provide a “one-stop” service. For 60,000 Yuan, Chinese men can expect to be married to a woman from Laos within 20 days. However, the service provided is illegal: charging for transnational matchmaking services is expressly prohibited in Mainland China.

However, online services claim that as long as the Laotian woman’s documents are in order, she can register to marry a Chinese husband legally. Many of the services offer a deal in which the man does not have to pay if the set up does not work.

A spokesperson for one such service named Zhang said that customers can choose a woman from photos provided by the company. Then the man will travel to Laos and go on a blind date with the woman. The company will arrange a translation for the date. Then, if the man and woman agree to the match, the company will charge an agency fee, a bride price, and a fee for the woman’s passport and other documents. The company will handle the woman’s paperwork so that she will be able to return to China with her new husband.

The Laotian woman who work with the service are usually between 17 and 25 years old. “Whether you are 30 years old or 40 years old, you can still marry a 20 year old Laotian woman,” said Zhang.
