It's a little dated but the "Education Statistics Yearbook of China 2005-2008" notes that in 2008 there were a little over 50,000 overseas students studying at undergraduate level in China and a bit over 10,000 at postgraduate level with a further 45,000 students studying non-degree language courses. This is up from 30,000 and just under 6,000 at undergraduate and postgraduate level respectivley in 2005. The US hosts 684,714 mobile students according to UNESCO (toys!!! weee!!!! http://www.uis.unesco.org/Education/Pages/international-student-flow-viz.aspx), the UK hosts 389,958 and Australia 271,231. To overtake Australia, international student numbers in China would need to have almost tripled between 2008 and 2014. It's possible but I'd suspect that if we counted the number of "foreign students" aswell as "mobile students" in France and Germany then we'd probably find one of them overtakes others into third place. I eman, I can see it happenning in China as more programs, especially postgraduate programs, have begun to be taught in English and aimed specifically at international students. Also, the three (now four) JVs got up and running during that period and they'll add a bunch. HK/Taiwan students might also play a role in these numbers but that would depend on how they were counted. But hands down China exports more students, lord yes.

BS. More popular than Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan or Spain? Let's ask Chinese international students (you'll find lots of them everywhere, paying exorbitant fees to NOT study in China) if they'd like to study in China. If they'd replaced "popular" with "affordable", I might believe it.
