The latest data from China’s internet security watchdog, the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team Coordination Center (CNCERT/CC), suggests that cyber attacks on China’s national ministries, enterprises and institutions are becoming more serious, with many attacks originating from other countries, according to a Xinhua News report on Sunday, March 10. During the first two months of the year, 6,747 overseas servers were detected to be using Trojan or botnets to control nearly 2 million computers in China, with 2194 of them located in the United States—more than any other country. Moreover, 96% of phishing sites for China’s online banking sites and online stores were located outside the country, with an estimated 73.1% of the servers hosting these phishing pages located in the U.S.

This report comes several weeks after Mandiant, a US network security company, released a 60-page report detailing attacks over the past few years from hackers it claims were working for the Chinese military.
