China has decided to increase police presence in a number of its major cities. So, expect to see far more armed police. The following cities will be affected: Shanghai, Harbin, Changsha, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Urumqi, and Lhasa among others. Armed patrols will be stationed at key locations, at key times, including around train stations, subways, piers, airports, ports, bus stations, schools, hospitals, parks, central squares, major streets, tourist attractions and shopping malls. In summary, any highly populated public space.

Police presence in Beijing was already heightened during the Two Sessions and it is likely to continue. While it can be unnerving to see an increase in police presence, officials have assured that it is for public safety reasons.
