Two executives were detained as an investigation into bribery allegations at their newspaper widens. The 21st Century Business Herald was closed down by Chinese authorities after executives confessed to extortion of companies, Reuters reports.

The chief editor at the paper, Shen Hao, and general manager, Chen Dongyang, were detained on Thursday. This adds to the eight suspects that are already being investigated in connection with these charges.

Apparently, since November 2013, suspects had extorted money from more than 100 companies, by writing negative articles about them, then charging money to have them removed. Deleting critical articles cost companies between 200,000 and 300,000 RMB.
