A foreign husband and wife investigation team that has business connections to disgraced pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline, has been indicted on charges of illegally gathering information on Chinese citizens.

British national Peter William Humphrey and his American Wife, Yu Yingzeng are being charged for illegally trafficking details on various Chinese citizens’ real estate, household registration and family background, alongside other personal information. Their clients included several large multinational companies, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The couple was apparently hired last July by GlaxoSmithKline CEO Mark Reilly, to investigate possible information leaks to the Chinese authorities-including the emergence of a sex tape featuring the former GSK director in his apartment. Reilly was officially charged with bribery in May and could face decades in prison, if found guilty by the Supreme Court.

Family members and foreign diplomats have been barred from attending Mr Humphrey and Ms Yu’s trial, which is set for August 7, prompting criticism of the lack of transparency in the Chinese judicial system.
