Since the early nineties, Mr Liang, of Guangxi, has been a frequent buyer of China Welfare Lottery tickets. Somewhat impressively, he managed to keep his hobby a secret from his wife for the entire past two decades, limiting his spending to 20 RMB or so a pop, and only occasionally winning back small prizes of 5-10 RMB.

However, Liang struck gold on May 14, after purchasing a ticket from a stall in Guigang City that perfectly matched up with the day’s winning numbers, making him 39.95 million RMB richer.

Liang said that he immediately told his wife about his big haul, though she didn’t believe him until he showed her the winning ticket.

On May 17, Mr Liang and his family headed down to the Guangxi Welfare Lottery Distribution Center to collect the winnings. According to interviews with the press, Liang plans to purchase a new apartment for his family.
