The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Guangdong Province has released a report stating that 6,454 people were infected with HIV/AIDS in 2012. Of those, 4,746 were found with HIV, while 1,708 had developed AIDS. Compared to 2011 this is an increase of 10.2% and 12.1% respectively. In August this year, Guangdong issued a statement saying there are currently 39,705 people infected with HIV or AIDS and that 10,028 people had died from infection.

Stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS in the Pearl River Delta region has become a priority for local government and health services. The new report showed that 85% of current sufferers contracted the virus from engaging in unsafe sex. Transmission in the homosexual community is rapidly on the rise; compared to heterosexual transmission the ratio is 4:1. Infection within the migrant communities accounts for half of all sufferers. It seems like improvement in sex education and improvement in services to migrant populations is a good place to start for local services.
