May 28, 2013 By eChinacities.com

The Guangdong Provincial Department of Education recently issued a 2013 revision of the “Guangdong teacher qualification standards for Physical Examination”, previously published in 2009. In the revised version, a provision saying “sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, unqualified” has been removed. This means that beginning next September, People who are HIV-positive may apply for their teaching qualifications in Guangdong Province.

The news was met with excitement from HIV-positive individuals and their supporters, but was met with apprehension from parents, who are concerned about the perceived greater health risks to the students.
