All those passion displays of patriotism that you see in China on a daily basis aren’t enough to sway these Chinese people to stay it seems. The second introductory meeting of Dutch Mars inhabitation project’s “Mars One” arrived in Shanghai on April 26, where they presented their plans to recruit four participants and put them on a one-way flight to Mars by 2023. Applicants can be as young as 18, and can sign up to the project by logging on to www.apply.mars-one.com (and paying the 38 USD application fee).

Mars One is a surreal-sounding non-profit project which aims to establish the first human settlement on Mars (no joke!). After getting through to the third round of the selection process, four candidates will be elected via a live television vote, where audiences decide who they want to see on Mars. According to people.com.cn, over 20,000 people have already applied to the project, with 600 of the applicants being from China.

With a reported cost of 6 billion USD, the largest challenge for “Mars One” project is raising enough money. Currently, there have been a few sponsors who have helped out with the project.

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids, In fact it's cold as hell And there's no one there to raise them if you did. And all this science, I don't understand. It's just my job, five days a week, A Rocket man.
