48 people have been confirmed dead and 10 injured after a plane crashed in Taiwan on Wednesday evening. TransAsia flight GE 222 carrying 54 passengers and 4 crew crashed into residential buildings after a failed emergency landing.

The plane was scheduled to take off at 16:00 from Kaohsiung airport, but ended up departing almost 2 hours later due to the bad weather. According to Taiwanese aviation authorities the aircraft couldn’t land due to poor visibility at Magong airport. The airplane then lost contact with the tower whilst circling in a second attempt to land. The plane eventually crashed into residential buildings in Xixi village in Penghu, injuring several villagers.

Many have speculated that bad weather was the sole purpose of the crash as the aircraft departed as Typhoon Matmo continued to batter the coast, causing power cuts to 30,000 homes; however it is still too early to determine the real reason. One of the plane’s black boxes has been discovered.

Two of the passengers aboard were French citizens while the rest were Taiwanese residents.
