The Washington Post reported on March 27 that the British scientific and medical publishing group BioMed Central recently revoked 43 papers, 41 of which were by Chinese authors. The papers were revoked after being found counterfeit after peer review. BioMed Central said that the papers are most likely just the tip of the iceberg and that there are many more fake articles in different scholarly publishing circles. In the peer review process, experts read over a paper and decide whether or not it should be admitted to a specific academic journal.
BioMed Central has published 277 peer-reviewed journals. The majority of papers that were withdrawn from the journals in question were from Chinese universities. The universities include China Medical University, Sichuan University, and Shandong University. Deputy Director of BioMed Central's Department of Research Integrity Jigisha Patel said, “This does not represent a general problem with Chinese articles. We have published many credible scientific papers by Chinese scholars.”
