40% of Rice Tested in Guangzhou Contains Excess Cadmium
May 17, 2013 By eChinacities.com

On May 15, the Guangzhou Food and Drug Administration issued the first quarter’s food testing results. Among the findings was the revelation that of all the rice and rice products tested, 44.4% contained excess Cadmium – a bluish white metal that is known to be carcinogenic and that irritates internal organs. The Food and Drug Administration tested the various products in 18 batches, of which eight batches failed the quality standards.

Despite revealing that 44.4% contained too much cadmium and therefore pose a health risk, the administration was unwilling to name the brands involved because it “isn’t convenient”, whatever that’s supposed to mean.

To rub more salt in the public’s wounds, one expert urged the public not to worry because Cadmium is only harmful when it accumulates in the body over a long period of time. However, the expert was clearly in no position to confirm how long people in Guangzhou have been consuming products with excess Cadmium.
