After the recent meat scandal that shook Shanghai and Jiangsu, it has now been discovered that similar methods, where fake lamb meat is sold in hotpot restaurants, is also prevalent in Guangzhou. According to information from a person in the Guangzhou hotpot industry, the use of fake meat in hotpots in Guangzhou has been going on for some time, though there haven’t been reports of the use of rat and fox meat in the “lamb” sold at the restaurants.

The “fake meat” is reportedly very cheap, costing only 15% to 20% of the price of real lamb, with only a dozen or so RMB being able to buy a portion’s worth. If ever you’re feasting on a hotpot in Guangzhou and fancy some lamb, be sure to find out information such as the production date, the manufacturer and their address, as well as various certifications that proves the meat is genuine.
