Description:

Georg Buchner’s Woyzeck remains one of the most enignmatic and influential works of modern theatre. The Sadari Movement Laboratory has taken on the task of creating a new dynamic interpretation of the play that illuminates the original’s hidden potentials while advancing a new language in physical theater. Using wooden chairs as a changeable metaphor, the performers both shape the dramatic space and reveal the characters’ emotional states, while Astor Piazzola’s dynamic tango becomes the throbbing pulse of the drama. Founded in 1999 by company director Do-wan Im after studying at the Ecole de Jacques Lecoq in Paris, SML is comprised of the creative contributions of all company members. Their Woyzeck is a surprising and deeply moving theatrical event.

Synopsis
Woyzeck is based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a low-class soldier in Leipzig who was found guilty of murdering his mistress in 1824. Between his conviction and execution, he was subjected to a dehumanizing medical examination to determine his ability to be held responsible for his actions. The implications of this scrutiny provide the impetus of Buchner’s play. The drama is shocking both for its content and its radically innovative episodic, hallucinogenic structure.

The Sadari Movement Laboratory
The Sadari Movement Laboratory developed out of the Sadari theater company, founded in 1988 by Do-wan Im and Hong-young You. After completing his studies at the Ecole de Jacques Lecoq, Do-wan Im returned to Korea where he began his experiments with non-verbal, kinetic theater. In 1999 he established the Sadari Movement Laboratory.

What most distinguishes the Sadari Movement Laboratory is the fully collaborative energies of all members of the troupe in the creative process – in their analysis of a text and its translation and in bringing the text to life through kinetic images, producing a theatrical experience in the economy and versatility of movement.

The company believes that the dynamic space and rhythm of an actor onstage can express the social and psychological state of the character more poignantly than the dialogue and conventions of realist drama. Furthermore, the company emphasizes the particular physical capabilities and characteristics of its members. In addition, all members are trained in traditional Korean dance and music as well as the Jacques Lecoq method to maximize the company’s repertory of expressive techniques.

The works of Sadari Movement Laboratory are diverse in genre. The company has produced Typist, the Cherry Orchard, Between Two Gates, Woyzeck, Spectrum 2001, a clown comedy, Human Comedy, and children's plays including puppet and mask plays.

The company’s rigorous training and its focused experimentation inform its commitment to a new theater and a new theater language, suitable for both Korean and international audiences.
