On March 31, the Ministry of Health and the Family Planning Committee announced that three people in China had contracted the lethal H7N9 virus. According to the announcement, the infected had experienced respiratory tract infections, pneumonia and difficulty breathing.

Two of three infected with the flu have now been reported to be dead, while the other remains in a critical condition. This is the first time a new sub-type of the influenza virus has been discovered. There is currently no vaccine against it.

The cases were reported to originate from Shanghai and Anhui. The two dead, both males from Shanghai, were 87 and 27 years old respectively. The surviving patient is a 35-year-old woman from Anhui who is currently being treated at a hospital in Nanjing.
