Freak weather seems to be on a relentless rampage at the moment, with recent hailstorms in Guizhou and Dongguan both causing tragedy. Similarly, a sudden downpour struck Changsha on the evening of March 22, with unfortunate residents Huang Ting and Yang Lijun getting caught in the storm. They were walking on a hill between a local post office and bank while Huang Ting was expressing her excitement to friend Yang after just having her hair done. As they neared home the unexpected occurred, with Yang taking a tumble down an open 6-meter deep manhole that wasn’t protected by a lid. Huang called the emergency services to come to the scene. More than 30 rescuers, including firemen, police officers and mine rescue specialists have been looking for her for the past few days with no luck and have since called off the rescue. Yang Lijun is from Chengbu County in Hunan’s Shaoyang City, and is currently a senior student at the Beijing University of Nationalities. This March, she’d come to Changsha to find intern work, and was living with her classmate.
