Nine people from Guangxi and nine people in Hainan province were confirmed dead yesterday after the strongest storm to hit China for four decades, Typhoon Rammasun, made landfall on the south coast this weekend. Five people are still missing.

Two government officials who were assisting in a rescue operation in Hainan were among the victims. Hainan province suffered the greatest damage in the hurricane, with econonomic losses estimated at 10.8 billion RMB. 51,000 houses and 40,000 hectares of crops were destroyed on the island.

More than 5.57 million people were affected by Rammasun across the south, as the typhoon damaged power and water supplies, telecommunications networks and roads, further hindering rescue efforts.

Guangxi province, which is still suffering heavy rainfall and strong winds has suspended rail services. Limited services will resume today, depending on the weather.

Rammasun, which has significantly weakened, has now headed northwest through north Vietnam before moving across to Yunnan province. Residents of the affected areas can expect torrential rain and strong gales.
