A thick blanket of smog didn’t deter visitors from flooding to Beijing during this year’s Golden Week. In fact, this year saw a rise in tourism with an estimated 13.5 million trips to the capital recorded during the week-long holiday.

These figures indicate a 5% increase in visitors over the same period last year, and this year’s spending also increased by 3.2% to 7.9 billion RMB. 2.75 million visitors came from other provinces in China, an increase of 7.2% from last year.

According to rankings on Chinese travel site Ctrip, Beijing was the most popular tourist destination in China this October holiday.
