The Ministry of Public Security has arrested over 1,000 people since May, after increased efforts to crack down on illegal border crossings.

852 of those cases involved smuggling criminal suspects out of the country.

Illegal crossing in the South West region bordering Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar has increased in recent years, prompting authorities to set up the ‘429’ task force to combat the problem.

The announcement by the Ministry has come as illegal border crossings have hit the headlines. Last week, 10 Turkish nationals were arrested allegedly attempting to smuggle Uyghur citizens out of China with fake passports.

Yesterday, two Uyghur people were also killed while attempting an illegal border crossing, while a third was later captured by police.

According to the Xinhua news agency, suspected terrorists have been caught attempting to illegally leave the country to go to Iraq and Syria to join jihadist movements.
