10 Million Families in China Will Lose Only Children, Depend on Pension

China's 4th Social Assistance Seminar was held on August 22 and 23 at Zhongshan University. Experts and scholars discussed solutions to issues with China's social assistance system.

Experts discussed Chinese families who have lost their only child (families whose only child has died and cannot have or adopt other child) and must live solely on their pension.

In an August 24 article, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post quoted University of Wisconsin scholar Yi Fuyin who stated that in 2013, out of 218 million only children in China, about 10 million will die before the age of 25. Therefore, China will soon have 10 million families who have lost their only children.
