China Considers Implementing Two-Child Policy This Year
Jul 22, 2015 By eChinacities.com

China's National Health and Family Planning Commission is considering lifting the ban on having more than one child, possibly by the end of this year. The commission is working on the implementation of a two-child policy, which would replace the current one-child policy.

The new plan is in response to the changes in China's population size and structure since the 1970s and 1980s.

16.5% of the Chinese population was under the age of 14 in 2014, down 0.1% from 2010. This is less than average when compared to other countries of the world. China currently has an aging population: 15.5% of Chinese were over the age of 60 in 2014, up from 13.3% in 2010.

China's working age population been on the decline for three consecutive years starting in 2011. This combined with a low birth date and an aging population has begun to create issues.

China's current fertility rate, or the average number of children per woman, is only 1.4. A 1.3 fertility rate is internationally recognized as too low to a maintain population size. To sustain a population, a nation generally needs a fertility rate of about 2.1.

Doesn't China already suffer from overpopulation? With the two child policy, every family will pop out to kids, hoping to at least have one son. And while I can understand people want to have two kids, I also think it will put a massive strain on the countries resources and economy. There is already an abundance in workforce now, which is also why salaries are low. More babies will mean bigger work force, which will mean even lower salaries, which will lead to more poor people in China... But just my 2 mao
