Tourist Brings 121 Ball Pythons To Shanghai, Says They’re “Toys”

Due to advances in science and technology, imitation snake toys can closely resemble the real thing. However, here’s one instance that has greatly surprised a lot of people: a man at Shanghai Airport claimed that 121 real python snakes were just toys in order to bypass an investigation at customs.

Shanghai Customs announced on November 13 that a tourist had carried the live snakes into the country without declaring them. The man of Chinese nationality, boarded a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai successfully. But he couldn’t get passed the all-seeing customs officers at Shanghai who discovered the man’s suitcase contained suspicious material when it was passed through an X-ray machine.

When customs officers opened the suitcase, they discovered 21 plastic boxes each with a snake wrapped up with black silk stockings inside. The man attempted to defend himself by saying that the snakes were all plastic toys. The jig was up though, when some of the snakes began to slither out of the suitcase.

A preliminary investigation has determined these snakes to be ball pythons, a species that belongs to the protected list of “Illegal Endangered Wild Animals and Plants for International Trade”.

At present, the smuggling department of Shanghai customs has implemented a criminal case against the man. Because, if it’s one thing they hate, it’s these monkey fighting snakes on these Monday-to-Friday planes.
