Rumors of Haunted House in Beijing Debunked
Oct 03, 2013 By eChinacities.com

A house at No.81 Chaoyangmen Nei in Beijing is slated to undergo renovations soon. “How the hell does this make the news?” you may be thinking. The house in question actually has a spooky history and many locals swear that the house is haunted by the wife of an officer who hung herself in the east building.

However, this morbid detail has done little to deter visitors, with the building often receiving paranormal “explorers”, photographers and TV crews. “Some explorers go there and hear strange sounds and have their companions scared,” one neighbor claimed.

With all this attention put upon this famous building, what is the truth behind it?

The security guard for the place states, “I’ve seen the rumors online. It’s likely that as the number of visitors to the house increases, so too will the mysterious nature of this place.”

Meng Ji, Director for the Beijing Catholic Infrastructure Office states that No. 81 Chaoyangmen Nei is not a “haunted house”, and that plans are already underway to renovate the premises. When asked the reason for why there are rumors of it being a “haunted house”, Meng says:

“Due to problems with insufficient capital, these two buildings have always been left unoccupied. In around 2005 or so, many spirited young people came to explore this building; they would exaggerate their experience and use their imaginations hence keeping the haunted house rumor alive and well. As well, literature, movies and television about this place started to appear and persuade people in thinking this was real when it is all rumors.”

And that rumor online about that “the wife of an officer hung herself in the east building”? Meng answers that by saying:

“According to all the information possessed by the Catholic Patriotic Committee, before the liberation of China the east building was lived by an elderly Belgium woman as a private residence and not that of any officer of the republic. Therefore this suicide is just a rumor.”

So this Hallowe’en you can rest assured that any haunted house you visit will have had the best waffles made in it many decades ago.
