Dalian Man Detained for Setting Off Firecrackers Outside Gaokao Exam Hall

The Gaokao exam period is a tough time for many in China; the intensity of which caused schools in Jilin province to even go as far as banning bras. One man in Dalian however seemed to forget the importance of the life-changing exams, and carelessly let off a fire cracker only 300 meters from an exam hall.

On the morning of June 7, a literature and language exam was underway at the Number 37 Middle School in Dalian’s Xigang District. At around 10:18, when the exam had been going on for almost 30 minutes, a sudden “BANG” was heard not far away. The deafening sound then continued for five minutes in what must have been either a godsend or a nightmare of a distraction, depending on how the exam was going for the students.

Parents situated outside the school were infuriated by the setting off of the firecrackers, and around 20 of them went with police who arrived on the scene to find the culprit. Police then discovered that a noodle joint on nearby Huanghe Lu had just had its grand opening, and the boss was letting off firecrackers as a way of celebrating. A friend of the boss of the restaurant stated that they didn’t know today was a test day, and the boss, surnamed Sheng, was later taken to the Xigang Public Security Bureau where he was detained for five days.

I wish that always happened for letting off fireworks but it seems harsh that they detain someone for 5 days for doing something that happens all the time. Is there an actual law that says exams are king? A law that states that those that open up a place to try to make a living have less rights than those that take exams in a middle school?
