International Flavours: Foreign Restaurants in Xiamen

Xiamen is home to hundreds of so-called “foreign restaurants”. But there are huge differences in the quality of the food and service at these establishments. From Latin food, to Italian and French cuisine, Xiamen’s dining scene has something to offer to everyone. This article introduces a number of restaurants serving up non-Chinese cuisine, so perhaps it can help you find that restaurant whose food and ambience is right for you.

The House Restaurant

1) The House Restaurant老别墅西餐厅 View In Map
Nestled on the second floor of a secluded, small villa, this restaurant is very easy to overlook if you don’t look out for its sign carefully. Upon entering, one almost gets the sensation that time has stood still here, thanks to the ancient Chinese tea tables juxtaposed with the European décor. The venue also boasts a small courtyard with outdoor seating, where occasionally you’ll see the restaurant owner’s dog shuttling about. This combination adds to a feeling of warmth and has been one of the reasons why so many people fall in love with this restaurant.

There are two rooms and a small bar on the first floor, while the second floor houses a film screening room and a snooker room – thus creating the perfect environment for friends to get together to wine, dine, talk and play.

The House Restaurant is one of the most popular Western dining establishments among expats in Xiamen, owing its success to its wide range of authentic Western dishes and wines, including seafood dishes like fresh bass, pizza, pasta and Philly steak. Their appetizers and juices are also hugely popular. Although this restaurant is one of the stars in Xiamen’s dining scene, the prices are actually quite reasonable. Do note however, that a 10% service fee is added to each bill.

One of the best things about Sara House is its lakeside location. It’s one of the few restaurants that offers impeccable views of lake scenery while dining, together with beautiful piano music playing in the background. The restaurant’s décor is simple, yet romantic. The walls are decorated with old-style paintings and sculptures can be seen on the window sills. The couches and seats are also really comfortable and its 500 square metres of floor space ensures a spacious and intimate dining space.

Sara House serves a wide range of French cuisine, such as escargot, goose liver pate, caeser salad, truffle pate with Philly steak, beef medallions and a selection of delicious cakes and desserts. Sara House also serves Italian coffee and an English tea buffet.

Located in Haiwan Park, not only is Havana Latin Restaurant nestled in serene surroundings, but it is the only authentic Latin restaurant in Xiamen today. The restaurant’s interior makes full use of its South American heritage, with the colours blue and red featured prominently. Every evening, lively Latin performance featuring music and dancing is held while you eat, attracting a large and multi-cultural audience.

Portofino Italian Restaurant

4) Portofino Italian Restaurant 波多菲诺意大利餐厅 View In Map
Portofino is located on the first floor of the Millennium Harbor View Hotel. The décor is, not surprisingly, Italian, with white table clothes on every table and pictures of Italy on the walls. But it’s not the décor that attracts the customers, but the authentic Italian fare that’s cooked up by the restaurant’s master chef Pippo. Hailing from Sicily, Pippo has worked for several world class restaurants around the world and has over 20 years of experience in the kitchen. When he’s not in the kitchen, Pippo likes to chat with customers and advise them on which dishes to order. He is even willing to cook dishes that aren’t featured on the menu, with the sole aim of wholly accommodating to the customer’s taste and requirements.

Portofino has one fixed menu and a monthly menu which changes. Each week, the restaurant has a new theme so that regular customers have the opportunity to try out a myriad of Italian dishes. Some of Pippo’s most popular dishes includes the pizzas and the swordfish.

It's "Siming" District, not Enming.
