16 hours in Xiamen may not seem like a lot of time, but if you plan accordingly then you can easily transform a short stint to an unforgettable retreat. We show you how…
Start your 16 hours in the city with a trip to the Xiamen Wushipu Oil Painting Village on Jiangtou Jiu in Huli District. See more than 5,000 artists work out of the village studios, selling a wide range of paintings that can be bought off the shelf or custom painted. Pick up a Chinese ink set yourself, and try your hand at calligraphy when you get back home!

Situated on the southwest side of Xiamen, this tiny island offers an afternoon's worth of enjoyable activity. Rent a bike and pedal to the fascinating Piano Museum. It has a gold-plated piano, an ancient eight-pedal piano, an antique manual organ and many more machines of melody. Then bike over to and climb the Sunlight Rock Scenic Area, a park with forests, caves and large rock formations. Walk up a narrow mountain staircase to reach the 204ft Sunlight Peak. The views over Xiamen and Jimei Island from the peak make the hike worthwhile.
Then head for the Dadeng Tri-Islet Tourist Area (大嶝三岛), a traditional fishing village that looks out over the islands of Quemoy and Jinmen. There you can sunbathe in the late afternoon rays, take a short cruise around the waters, or go shopping on the sandy shores. Hungry after that action packed afternoon? Why not enjoy as fresh a seafood meal as you can get, in a family-run local restaurant.
Laze over the dinner while the sun goes down, and then head back to the "mainland" to take in a performance at the Renmin Theater. It holds nightly shows called "Dancing Xiamen Folk Performances", cultural extravaganzas featuring folk costumes, Minnan music and puppet shows. Round off your 16 hours in Xiamen with a visit to one of its glitzy clubs, like KK Recreation Ground on Lianyue Lu or Youfu Nightclub on Bailuzhou.
