Yes folks, even cultural backwater Shijiazhuang now has some decent Western restaurants to be proud of. In our following list, we describe some of the more prominent establishments; some are buffets located in 5 star hotels; some are national chains; while others are private firms opened by entrepreneurial expats. They may not be as luxurious or diverse as the myriad choices in the capital, but if you don’t like it you can just stop moaning and hop on a train heading northbound!

Yunhaixuan Western Buffet

The first thing that strikes you as you enter the buffet hall here is the giant illuminated pillar in the middle of the room that emanates gold and blue light like some sort of magic tree. It creates a warm atmosphere which is complimented by the soft shades of almond and tangerine that adorn the tables and carpet. The menu is western and includes salmon, escargot, beef fillets, pizzas, and freshly squeezed fruit juices, and this being a 5 star joint, it’s all prepared freshly on-site.

It’s big, it’s spacious, it’s mock-European; it’s gotta be the Portland Coffee bar! Occupying over 2,000m² of floor space including 12 luxury private rooms and nine booths, it has room to seat over 500 guests, and is decorated and furnished in a luxury ‘palace’ style, with a choice of chairs or sofas. The stars on the menu here are the steaks and the homemade ice-cream.

3) Babela’s Kitchen巴贝拉意式休闲西餐厅 View In Map
Babela’s is a modern, open, brightly-lit Italian-style chain restaurant serving up an odd mix of Western and even faux-Western cuisine. Staple favourites like pizza and spaghetti bolognese are obvious crowd pleasers, but ‘authentic Italian dishes’ such as ‘chicken toast’, ‘Western zesty waffle crispers’, ‘fried creamed potato’ and the indulgent ‘friend beer banana’ would leave Marco Polo scratching his head and wondering what had happened to the antipasti. Still, if you want some fun and a great place to come for a dessert, then you could do no worse than stopping by. Bring a camera – the whole menu has to be seen to be believed!

Aegean Sea Restaurant

4) Aegean Sea Restaurant石家庄爱琴海西餐厅 View In Map
One of the earliest-established Western restaurants in Shijiazhuang, the owners (a married couple) have spent a considerable amount of time in France, so for that reason the Western grub is up to scratch. The restaurant is kind of lacking in floor space, which ultimately makes it ‘cozy’ if you’re an optimist, or ‘cramped’ if you’re grumpy. The menu features dozens of handmade pizzas made on-the-spot, and a bunch of other Western dishes made with precision and care. What’s interesting is they brew their own booze — if you’re nice to the manager he might give you a cup on the house! — and they also ferment their own yoghurt here, so pudding is most definitely on the menu.

5) Kerry’s Cottage克里小屋西餐厅 View In Map
Kerry’s is a lovely little place specializing in steaks and such, made by a genuine Frenchman who absolutely refuses to add any additives or unknown muck to his meats. He’s a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to cooking with French wines, and his skills on the grills means that everything is served thick and juicy. If you a) love meat or b) want to wine & dine someone, why not bring them to Kerry’s?
