Super Steak in Shenzhen Fined 1.22 Million RMB in Beef Scandal

Super Steak, an upscale Western restaurant in Futian District, was fined nearly 1.22 million RMB by the Shenzhen Food Administration for selling contaminated steak, setting a new record for the highest fine issued by Shenzhen authorities.

A total of 411 kilograms of the frozen beef were found to be lacking the proper certification in an inspection that took place on June 8. There was also no Chinese label on the packages. Shenzhen entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau checked some of the frozen beef and found excessive water levels in one batch of the imported beef and ractopamine in another batch. Ractopamine is a variety of the banned drug clenbuterol, an animal feed additive that promotes leanness in cattle.
