On July 20, CACTI stated that one of their reporters had sent ice and toilet water from the Chongwenmen branches of KFC and Kungfu in Beijing for lab tests. The test results showed that the bacteria levels in the ice were 20 times that of the international standard and 13 times that of toilet water.

The amount of CFUs (bacteria colony-forming units) found in the Kungfu ice cubes were reported to be 120 and 900 per milliliter respectively; both of which exceed the national limit of 100 per milliliter. KFC showed the most worrying results however, with 2,000 CFUs per milliliter detected in their ice cubes; 19 times the international standard and 12 times the levels found in toilet water.

Following the exposure, KFC have issued an apology and have also promised to tighten up hygiene checks to ensure that standards are met.
