Police Must Film Interrogations to Prevent Foul Play

In a landmark move to protect the rights of suspects, the Ministry of Public Security will introduce new requirements that police film all interrogations and interviews.

The new plan has been put into place to improve gathering of evidence and ensure accountability of police officers in the early stages of cases. The measure also calls for changes in the way that police handle interrogation of suspects and to prevent the use of torture to extract confessions.

The move comes after the post-humus acquittal of an Inner Mongolian teenager executed for murder caused waves across the country. As details of the case were made public, it emerged that his case had moved unusually fast and that an officer was promoted after his execution as a result of his ‘swift work’.

However, one official mentioned that there is still a long way to go in terms of law enforcement in China: “Law enforcement is not strict, not standardized, not just. The trading of power for money and bending the law for personal gain seriously undermines police credibility”.
