German cash & carry Metro will open a brand new store at Liyuan Xintiandi in Panyu District on September 12. The new store will have a 9000 square meter floor space and will sell all the usual goods from imported groceries to regional products.
Customers can obtain a membership card by showing their ID and providing a passport photo. If you’re on the fence about going to so much trouble just to be able to shop, the fact that Metro is the first such supermarket to introduce a traceability system may help you make up your mind. All Star Farm products at the store can be traced back directly to the farmer and enable greater control and oversight of the supply chain.
If the Europe horse meat scandal has left you suspicious at all, this system is a very good step in preventing similar scandals in the future.
