According to information released by the Environmental Protection Office of the City of Guangzhou, districts of Guangzhou that include Baiyun, Liwan, Haizhu, Panyu, Huangpu, and Luogang all have areas that have been identified as code purple for being under the influence of heavy air pollution up until 12:00 on December 5. This will mark the first time this year Guangzhou has received severe wide-scale air pollution.

After an hour, the air pollution affecting these Guangzhou areas had all disappeared and the entire central and southern areas were then re-classified as having medium levels of pollution. When nightfall arrived, however, the Panyu Bridge Monitoring Station again reported that serious levels of pollution had again re-appeared.
