Fudan University Publishes Cohabitation and Marriage Survey Results

Shanghai’s Fudan University just published a report on a questionnaire on Chinese societal changes, recording the responses from nearly 10,000 born as part of the ‘post-80s’ generation.

The report indicates that 43% of those who are part of the post-80s generation lived with their partners before getting married, with 70% of those who were in a relationship living together within a year of being in a relationship.

At the same time, the report indicates that 60% of those living together are already engaged, and the other 34.5% have already made concrete wedding plans. According to those living together but not married, living together is like the ‘test’ before marriage.

The report also pointed to previous studies conducted by Yale University that showed that couples who live together before marriage had a divorce rate 80% higher than those who did not live together. The reasons given for this were low marriage equality, lower marriage satisfaction, more arguments and disagreements, and less communication.
