Five domestic flights in China received separate threats on the morning May 15, forcing delays on grounded planes and emergency landings for planes in mid-flight, according to a report by the Civil Aviation Resource Network (CARNOC) website. (The website was vague on the type of threats (威胁信息) that were received this time, though in the past such threats were usually bomb-related).

Three of the flights were operating under Shenzhen Airlines, which announced the news on Weibo at 10:05. According to the post, flights to Shenzhen from Nanjing (No. ZH9866), Xi’an (No. ZH9243), and Beijing (No. ZH9889) each received a threat between the times of 08:00 and 08:33. For safety reasons, the first flight was ordered to return to Nanjing, the second flight was rerouted to Guilin, and the Beijing flight, which was yet to depart, was delayed. Police are currently investigating these incidents.

Netizens also reported that Juneyao Airlines flight HO1111 from Shanghai to Shenzhen also received a threat, leading authorities to order the plane to return to Hongqiao Airport 30 minutes after its departure. Police and a bomb-proof vehicle arrived at the scene, and boarded the plane for inspection, while the passengers remained seated.

News of another plane receiving similar threats was also reported by several Chinese netizens, though details of the flight No. and subsequent actions are currently unknown.

Chinese aviation officials have stated that such an incident—in which a series of threats occur around the same time—is very rare, noting hat the threats were most likely planned.
