Chinese police have announced a crack down on websites that offer ‘deals’ on brides from Southeast Asia according to China Daily.

Wang Ying, from the human trafficking department of the criminal investigation bureau says that the advertisements claim to bring women across the border as part of a previous arrangement, but in reality, many cases involve kidnapping and coercion. Marriage agents can charge men 30,000-50,000 RMB for arranging a marriage with an overseas bride- in China, with it’s enormous gender disparity, this is an attractive option for desperate men who are willing to go to extreme lengths to secure a bride.

As well as forced marriages, many Southeast Asian women are trafficked to China to work as sex workers in China’s border regions.

China will be working in cooperation with the Myanmar government in an increased effort to combat trafficking; 211 human traffickers have been caught by Myanmar authorities this year alone.
