Apple Pay Faces Patent Lawsuit from Chinese Company
Feb 23, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Apple Pay launched in China this past Thursday and already faces a lawsuit from Chinese startup Fastfox.

Fastfox announced on WeChat this morning that Apple Pay for Apple Watch infringes on a technology patented by the Chinese company.

Apple Pay’s NFC (near-field communication) technology currently works with the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch. Fastfox’s CEO recently said that, “Using NFC technology on an Apple Watch has been patented by our company. Apple never applied for the patent.”

The patent covers NFC technology for the Apple Watch when used with public transportation cards, bank cards, and mobile payments.

This lawsuit may be a hitch for Apple Pay, which hopes to join WeChat and Alipay as the top companies for mobile payments in China.

China is the fifth country to support Apple Pay. The service was previously launched in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.
