Strange Chinese architecture seems to appear one after the other in China. We’ve previously seen buildings like the “Big Pants” (the new site of CCTV headquarters) and the “three kitchen utensils of Shanghai” (the Jinmao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Shanghai Tower), and now we have a new one – the “Brass Puffer” in Yangzhong, Jiangsu Province. Ever since it has first appeared, the “Puffer Fish” has attracted a lot of controversy due to its cost of 70 million RMB. What is the worth of spending so much money on such a landmark?

The “Brass Puffer Fish”, also known as the “Puffer Fish Tower”, is located at the Yangzhong Garden Expo on Xisha Island. This “Puffer Fish” measures 90 meters long, 44 meters wide and 62 meters high, and weighs a total of 2100 tons. The outer hull of the structure consists of 8920 individual plates that are fitted together. Upon the belly of the puffer fish are written the words “Puffer Fish Island, Yangzhong, China”. The two eyes of this to-scale “Puffer Fish” are aligned north and south, while the sun shines down upon its gleaming scales causing it to shimmer and look like a “giant goldfish”. At night, the exterior of the fish is lit up with a programmed LED display that causes it to change color.

According to officials, the Puffer Fish Tower is the largest urban strange steel sculpture throughout all of China with a net volume that should rank it among the world’s largest. Forays are currently made toward applying the sculpture for a Guinness world record.
