A man who was falsely sentenced to death and spent 16 years in prison was finally acquitted this week and received 1.57 million RMBcompensation.

Xu Hui was arrested and convicted for the rape and murder of a 19 year old girl in Zhuhai in 1998.  September of this year, he was finally given a retrial and was acquitted by the Guangdong Provincial Higher People’s Court on December 24.

Since he was handed down his death sentence in 2001, Xu appealed against the verdict several times, only to have it refused.

Xu was eventually acquitted after the retrial found that there was insufficient evidence for a convinction in the original case.

Last week, the parents of an Inner Mongolian teenager who was wrongfully executed for rape and murder in 1996 also announced that they would seek compensation.

Capital punishment in a country that has some of the most useless police and detectives around - pretty scary! I'd say half the people on death row in China are innocent.

That's a lot of money, but 16 years is a long, long time.
