“I’ve Been Robbed!” - Sneaky Taxi Driver Uses LED Display to Avoid Tollgate Fee

Consider it a poetic sequel to last week’s airport-bound bomb scare lady for you, proving once again that Chinese drivers are an unendingly creative bunch.

On the highway to Shehong County, Sichuan at around 23:00 on April 14, a taxi was seen with an LED display above his car reading “I’ve been robbed; please call the police!” as it sped through a tollgate at nearby Huima Town. After reading the sign, a passerby amazingly did as the LED message requested. The police from Shehong County promptly set out to look for the taxi, and eventually found it parked at a nearby intersection at 15:00 the next day. They were unable to find the driver, though the LED display still brandished the same message. After eventually discovering that the taxi belonged to a man name Deng, police got in touch with the driver who denied that he had been robbed.

Apparently, after he passed through the tollgate at Huima Town, Deng realized that he’d have to pass through yet another tollgate to get to Shehong County. To avoid paying yet another costly tollgate fee, Deng opted to change the LED display to the aforementioned message before he reached the next tollgate, assuming the emergency situation would allow him to avoid the fee, but not realizing that some Good Samaritan out there might actually try to help him.

After discovering the truth of Deng’s “robbery” tactics, police sentence him to ten days detention for reporting a false crime.
