Late for Her Flight, Woman Calls in Bomb Threat

Late for Her Flight, Woman Calls in Bomb Threat

At the end of 2012, Wang Yan, who was working in Shenzhen, planned to visit her sick mother, who had just had an operation. On December 31, Wang drove from Shenzhen to Guangzhou’s Baiyun Airport, planning to board the 13:20 flight to Urumqi, where her mother lived. At around 11:15 however, Wang got stuck in some traffic on the highway. She tried calling the airport’s customer service department to get an update on the departure status of her plane, but no one was picking up. At 13:21, Wang, who was still stuck in traffic and determined not to miss the flight, called the airport again and told the operator that there was a bomb onboard the plane.

After the news spread around the airport, the plane was grounded, and all the passengers were ushered off the plane to go through security once more, luggage and all. The fiasco caused the Urumqi-bound plane to be late by almost three hours, with the following Guangzhou to Urumqi flight also being delayed by an hour and a half.

After the bomb scare was discovered to be a hoax, Wang was arrested at the airport. The court stated that as she was a first-time offender and had a pretty compliable attitude during the proceedings, she would be given a light sentence, though still faces one year in prison.
