Chengdu Residents get Fake 6.0 Earthquake Warning as part of Disaster Test
Aug 12, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Yesterday, a number of Chengdu residents received a message on their phones telling them that a 6.0 scale earthquake occurred in Beichuan County, Sichuan. The message turned out to be fake, and was part of a test of an early warning system from Chengdu's Hi-Tech Mitigation Institute.

The National Seismic Network posted soon after on its official Weibo that, “the area did not experience a 6.0 scale earthquake, please do not panic.”

A spokesperson from the National Seismic Network said that sending a false disaster warning to the community caused a panic, and that early warning information for earthquakes should be nationally coordinated. Furthermore, early disaster information should not be published by companies or individuals.

Chengdu's Hi-Tech Mitigation Institute disagreed. The institute announced on its Weibo that, “the test achieved good results, and the results will be announced today.”
