78 Year Old Man’s Unconventional Birthday Celebration Puts Us to Shame

What do you usually do for your birthday? We eat a lot of cake, maybe open a gift or two and then eat a lot more food, and we definitely avoid hard work as much as possible.

This 78 year old man from Shandong has gone for an unconventional birthday celebration to say the least and has put us all to shame in the process. Mr. Deng spent the early hours of his birthday, running. And we don’t mean a little 15 min jog to get the blood flowing. On November 8 he got up early, headed to the Weifang Institute and proceeded to run around the 400 meter athletic track a total of 78 times. Because of course that is what you do when you are 78 years old.

Mr. Deng’s friends came out in full force to help too. Although it was 05:00 the track was heaving with people as many other runners from the area came out to wish him a happy birthday and to run with him. More than 100 people were there to encourage him.

As the light came up many people had to head of to work, and people who had run 30-40 laps with him had to leave, but a loyal six people stayed with him till the end. After four hours of running he reached the final lap. According to Deng he was having a great time, “It very comfortable, very relaxed, I could run another 10 km,” he said. Okay now he is just showing off!

One of the runners who stayed with him until the end said, “Deng left his house at 04:20, ran the 4.5 km to the Weifang Institute and then ran 78 laps of 400 meters, that adds up to more than 35 km.”

Well kudos to Mr. Deng, who has planned to make this a tradition. So if you are around Weifang Insitute in Shandong on November 08 next year, look out for Mr. Deng. Hopefully he will still be out there putting us all to shame.
