Guangdong Man Wins New Apartment in “Wife Carrying Race”
Oct 23, 2013 By eChinacities.com

If calling one’s wife the “old ball and chain” is improper, then the contest known as the “wife carrying race” has made that old cliché a vivid living metaphor. For Wu Ziwen, carrying his wife to victory in this race has won him a new apartment – the second such win in two consecutive years.

On October 19, the property developer, Kaisa Group, had its Fifth Annual Client Exercise Event in which the 150 meter wife carrying race is the highlight of the competition. This year 19 groups from all over China competed in the race, in which the most important rule is that the woman's feet is not allowed to touch the ground.

Winners Wu Ziwen and She Peihua hail from Foshan, Guangdong Province and have won the championship two years in a row. Upon paying the 20% tax on the total value of the apartment, they will become the new owners of a waterside house on the Dongdai River. If you combine it with last year’s award, which is located in Suizhong, the couple’s total winnings amount to 700,000 RMB.

Wu tells his secret: “My wife is 40 kilos, while I am 65 kilos; before the race we both go on diets. After dinner at 21:00 we exercise very strictly." Wu says that the secret to his success is that he and his wife have a good weight ratio that complement each other, and from the fact that they have adopted the international technique of "the golden upside-down hanging posture" in order to economize energy and hasten their movements.

Because he is such a gracious winner, Wu says, despite complaints from other competitors, he will compete again if there is another competition. This may be just as well; the apartment they own last year is still being renovated. They haven’t even been to the new apartment in person. Can they stretch this winning streak into a trilogy? We will have to wait until next year to find out.

The Kaisa Group has not made a comment on this, but they have registered the word "wife carrying contest" in China, and only Kaisa is legally allowed to hold such contests. And that is a ball and chain worth keeping.
