18 Year Old Boy Commits Suicide after Lying about Gaokao Score

In Sichuan’s Wangcang, an 18 year old boy whose parents were away working in Beijing, lied about his Gaokao score. The boy claimed to have scored 470 points, 20 points above the score required to get into top universities in first tier cities- in reality, his score was only 170 points.

He sat on this secret for a whole summer, but when his parents came back from Beijing to congratulate him, he couldn’t take the pressure and ended his life by jumping off a cliff.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time the Gaokao has led to tragic consequences- many Chinese teenagers’ entire future rests on this one exam, and the pressure to succeed is immense; children begin preparing at around 12 years old and most kids spend literally years preparing for this one test.

Excuse me, if in China school is difficult..... then what can I say about my country where is the most complex school system in the world ???? I come from Romania and if you want to know what we must learn in the primary school and middle school , Chinese learn at university that level ! And yes, they think is difficult, of course, because their parents give them everything !!! The child in China is spoiled and manipulated in the same time ! He has no right to decide his life by him/herself , his/her marriage, etc... This is why they think is hard pass this exam ! I was giving this exam at many different fields, one it was mathematics, then Romanian ( oral and write ), Phisics ( oral and write), Chemistry ( write) , Biology ( oral and write) , Economics ( oral and write) , Sport ( must have athletic performance score) , foreign language ( oral and write) and I passed them all with the score of 9,73 from 10, a score that is very very good and less peoples get it. But I didn't received from my parents I-phone, computer, etc.... I was just thinking to learning and now I arrived in China by myself also ! I wish Chinese parents understand that spoiling their kids and manipulating them, will only send them to do this act of suicide ! Let the kids to feel life and choice and to know how to make money to survive ! Stop giving them everything they need ! Then you will see the result of this exam will be the one you want, not a death at 18 years old !

It is not uncommon to find Chinese who want their kids to get what they didn't in their life, be it face, money, education ...etc. They of course would tell you it is for the kid's own good. However, when you hear someone bragging about his/her kids' achievments for over 2 hours over lunch, you know you have a people-user who deep down is more concern about his/her face than the kids' welfare, the kind who uses his/her kids like a christmas tree.

Chinese People are so dumb sometimes. You get used by your government over and over again. The inflation rate is so bad compare to other countries currencies. They make you study all your life just so you can do this test. While your never going to land a job getting paid more then 3000 dollars a month. Unless your father has connections. Here in Canada working McDonalds as a high school drop out gets you paid more -_- I personally made of a average of 7k just from sitting on the computer trading stocks. That would be 39250. I'm only 22 years old and i made more then my 40 year old cousin back in china. 30times more. Screw this Gaokao exam, Try and get yourself to a international school. That way you have a chance in life.

Yes, but you should compare life in Canada with life in China... How much is the rent an apartment in Canada ? compared with China , I tell you, is more than double ! How much cost food there? how much cost transport there ? Then see how much you earn per month ...

Children spend too many in school and too many hours after school doing homework. Maybe if they had the time to relax, breathe and enjoy the outdoors they would do much better at many things.

The Education system is a profit taking system in China. In most cases it is one big scam designed to get money. But the returns on this education are dismal. Many uni kids can't secure a job much better than a sales position. Many of the Chinese kids that go overseas find the differences so great, ie creativity vs. memorization, they can't survive there either unless the parents sent large sums of money.
