Seeing as in China it pretty much determines the future of millions of students across the country, the Gaokao can be a tough time for many. One girl from Hubei was recently unfortunate enough to fail her Gaokao test, though it was her father who took it the worst, as he expressed his grief by repeatedly jumping in a nearby river… together with his wife and the girl in question of course.
Xiao Fu, of Hubei’s Gong’an County, is actually usually a pretty decent student, so when it came to her taking her Gaokao this year, her family weren’t worried. However, when it turned out she failed, her father was shocked and insisted that the entire family attempt mass suicide by jumping into a nearby river. Luckily, the family have been spotted and saved by local residents each time they jumped.
Reportedly, Xiao Fu’s family is pretty poor, and apart from owning a few fields, make a bit of extra cash by picking up and selling off trash. When the prospect of Xiao Fu attending university seemed like a reality after the family received some kind donations which let her attend high school, her parents were understandably excited.
On June 27, the three were spotted once again trying to end their lives via river jumping, and were once again saved by passersby. Afterwards, the mother even tried to end her misery by drinking water containing pesticide, though thanks to alert citizens, was soon rushed to hospital and saved. Currently, more donations from the village have begun to be given to Xiao Fu and her family in order to get them through this rough period.

with that crack pot as a father i would have been distracted while taking the test also. could you imagine the abuse she's had to endure

My thoughts, exactly. With parents as self-indulgent as these, the poor girl never had a chance. And it is the height of self-indulgence to resort to repeated suicidal theatrics (that always 'just happen' to take place in front of attentive neighbors who can stop the attempt from actually going through), that you place squarely on the shoulders of a teenaged girl.

Some students are just not good test takers. Maybe this girl is a good student but a single test to determine your future is not the best way to select people to university. What this girl can do is take another year of middle school and try it again next year.
