Craving a Juicy Steak in Beijing? Eat Here

Not so long ago and very far away, I lived in a land where steak was nearly as common a sight on restaurant menus as jiaozi dumplings are here in Beijing, and in a city where KFC was not one of the best options for a side of corn and mashed potatoes. Here in the Jing, there are fewer options for steak and all the fixings that go with it, that’s for sure, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t good, juicy, well-cooked steaks to be found and devoured. In recent years, along with the increase of expats moving to the city, there has been an influx of great restaurants serving steak – so many that I hesitate to say which are the best, as I’m sure to be missing some. In any case, here are a few of the better known restaurants in Beijing to order a tender juicy steak.

Chef Too

1) Chef Too美西西餐厅 View In Map
The owner of Chef Too is from New York, a place that knows a thing or two about great steak. He is very friendly and on nearly every occasion that I’ve dined here, I’ve met and talked with him. It’s that kind of place with a neighborhood feel and good service. They use only imported meat that has never been frozen and in addition to serving perfectly grilled steaks, their burgers are fantastic. A 10 ounce New York Strip is 188 RMB and an 8 ounce filet is 228 RMB. Also try their brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 09:30 and going until 15:00.

Alameda

You may want to jot down Alameda’s phone number before you head out to find it. As many times as I’ve been to this fantastic and classy Brazilian restaurant in Sanlitun, it’s easy to get turned around in the alleys around Sanlitun where it is located and a quick call for directions while you’re on your way helps. At Alameda, you can order a la cart but their lunch and dinner set menus are a real deal and include steak options. Both include 1 starter, and 1 entree. Dinner is 158 RMB and their lunch menu is perhaps the best bargain in town at 68 RMB.

3) SALTView In Map
While SALT is always revolving and re-inventing its menu, its quality service and enjoyable atmosphere doesn’t change. If you have heard good things about this place but aren’t yet convinced, take a look at their menu posted on their website. It reads nearly as fantastic as it tastes and their beef tenderloin steak is a definite “best” in the city. You can order a 2-course dinner for 188 RMB or a 3-course dinner for 218 RMB. The lunch set menu starts at 88 RMB.

The Astor Grill 艾斯特扒房

4) The Astor Grill 艾斯特扒房View In Map
The Astor Grill is a New York-style restaurant inside the St. Regis Hotel. Its prices are also New York prices. However, if money isn’t an object for you (at least for one night), this upscale restaurant with contemporary décor and white tablecloths serves lavish steaks and side dishes. It also has a outdoor seating area and plenty of cocktails.

5) FlammeView In Map
The masterminds behind such ventures as Element Fresh and The Orchard are behind this relatively new Sanlitun addition. Proving to be a big hit in the Western dining scene, Flamme serves great cuts of fresh meat at reasonable prices as far as steakhouses go. For 98 RMB, you can dig your steak knife into 150g of succulent beef steak. Their side dishes and desserts are also scooping up their fair share of attention, with shoestring fries going for a respectable 18 RMB a portion. Finish your feast with one of the sinful, but delicious dessert options such as panna cotta. Finally, wash all those calories down with one of their excellently mixed cocktails.

1001 Nights

6) 1001 Nights 一千一夜View In Map
1001 Nights is a Middle Eastern restaurant and although they may not boast the best steaks in Beijing, the atmosphere and floor show complete with belly dancing and martial artists can’t be beat. While I sat near the stage and dined there last weekend, I saw a man swallow an entire three foot long balloon and another man grip a red hot burning poker in his hand while he executed a high kick. Why, I can’t be sure, but the show is definitely a fun and entertaining experience in addition to the restaurant’s delicious and moderately priced food. I recommend ordering a side of the cucumber yogurt sauce to accompany any steak (or kebabs) you order from their large menu selection; choose from filet mignon, steak au poivre, steak cordon bleu, and more. Start with hummus for an appetizer and finish your meal with a handful of Middle Eastern pastries including lady fingers and baqlava (“baqlawa” on the menu). You can also order a bottle of wine starting at 138 RMB to wash it down in style.
